On 24 April, the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to India, Vahagn Afyan, participated in an event held in Chennai (Madras) to commemorate the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

In his address to the attendees, Ambassador Afyan noted that every year the Republic of Armenia and the Armenian people commemorate and pay tribute to the victims of the Armenian Genocide. He emphasized Armenia’s efforts that led to December 9 being included in the UN’s list of international days as the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime. He also highlighted the unanimous adoption of Armenia’s resolution declaring a decade under the same theme in 2025, as well as the consensus-based adoption of another Armenia-led resolution at the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council in March 2026. The Ambassador added that, while keeping alive the memory of the innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide, the Republic of Armenia continues active efforts to build good-neighborly relations with surrounding countries, which is essential for ensuring lasting peace in the South Caucasus.
The event, held on the grounds of the the Saint Mary Armenian Church of Chennai, was attended by the Honorary Consul of Armenia in Chennai, Shivkumar Eashwaran. A representative of the local Armenian community, Ashkhen Khachatryan, also delivered remarks, followed by a wreath-laying and candle-lighting ceremony.
Ambassador Afyan also visited sites in Chennai that bear Armenian historical traces, particularly the St. Thomas Mount basilica church, where there are gravestones with Armenian inscriptions, religious images, and memorial stones. He stressed the importance of taking steps to ensure their proper preservation.
